Ranthambore region is famed all over the world for the Ranthambore National Park a tiger reserve and a home for Indian tigers. The city of Sawai Madhopur, that lies on Delhi - Mumbai railway line, serves as the main gateway to park. The history of Ranthambore is also very interesting. Ranthambore has seen many battles and the reign of different rulers over the past 1000 years. Govinda, the grandson of Prithviraj Chauhan ruled this region for several years. Vagabhatta, successor of Govinda, built different structures to beautify the city. Some other noteworthy rulers who reigned over this region were Rana Kumbha, Hada Rajputs of Bundi, Mughal Emperor Akbar, Aurangazeb, Shah Alam, and Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I of Jaipur.

It is located about 100 km from Ajmer and has Chambal River in its south and Banas River in the north. This region served as the hunting ground for the royal families and later for British officers. A number of interesting stories are associated with the origin of the word ‘Ranthambore’. According to a belief, this word was derived from the name of two hills, Ran and Thanbhor, in the area. Another story says this region was earlier known as Rana Stambhapura that later became the Ranthambore. The wildlife sanctuary in Ranthambore was set up in 1959. In 1972, the Project Tiger was implemented here and in 1981, it received the status of a national park. The topography of the region mainly consists of rocky plains and small hills. The area is full of dry deciduous forests, farmland, and a number of villages. Among the main wildlife found here are tigers, sloth bears, hyenas, leopards, etc. Crocodiles, wild boars, jungle cats are also present here in good numbers. Believed to date from 944 AD, the Ranthambore Fort lies atop a hill in Aravali and Vindya hill range and has about 7 km of circumference. Built by a Chauhan ruler, the fort is known for its impressive architecture and features beautiful interiors with excellent carving work. One of the finest sections of the fort is the Hamir Court where one can hear even a whisper.
The best time of the year to visit Ranthambore is the period from September to March when the weather remains pleasant and cool. Jaipur airport is the nearest airport to Ranthambore region. The airport is connected to several cities of India by means of air services offered by Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, etc. For those interested in rail transport, Sawai Madhopur serves as the nearest railway station. Ranthambore area is also connected to other parts of the Rajasthan by good road network.
